Author Spotlight: Crystal Britton’s new release “Nothing Going On But The Rent”



Crystal Britton’s new memoir “Ain’t Nothin Goin On But The Rent” explores self love, societal pressure, black mental health and breaking generational curses.


Upcoming author Crystal Britton released her self memoir this past June, in which she shares some of her life/self-love journey and how to face adversity through her lenses and experiences.


Amber: What do you think are the most common stigmas about mental health in the black community?


Crystal: The most common stigmas about mental health in the black community is not opening the doors for therapy which brings transparency for us to be open and allowing homes to believe that the men should hustle in the streets to fund housing.


Amber: What inspired you to be vulnerable and share your story with the world through your literature?


Crystal: What inspired me to be vulnerable and share my story with the world through my literature is to inspire the black girls, that read through my understanding. Placing self in common, positive spaces to overcome situations and become a better version of you.


Amber: One of the best lessons you’ve learned through your experiences so far?


Crystal: One of the best lessons I’ve learned through my experiences so far is that being surrounded by positive, influential energy will always win in real life.


Amber: What advice would you give to your younger self or someone who may be facing similar hardships that you’ve overcome?


Crystal: The advice that I gave to my younger self or someone who may be facing similar hardships that I’ve overcome is learning with patience. I was able to own who I am by simply taking time for myself.


Amber: How would you define beauty? Has your definition of beauty altered since your experience with alopecia?


Crystal: Defining beauty is within and how I express myself. Being bold in my skin brought intriguing attention to self and opened my eyes to believe more that I am not my hair. My definition of beauty enhanced since my experience with alopecia. I am more than my battles, I am light.


Amber: What are some of your recommendations for ending mental health stigmas in the black community?


Crystal: Some of my recommendations for ending mental health stigmas in the black community would be creating spaces for people to decompress by socially speaking on topics that will counsel the mood of what’s going on. Book clubs is a greats source of choice, being able to connect.



Amber: What are the key takeaways you would like readers to get from your book?


Crystal: The key takeaways I would like readers to get from my book “Ain’t Nothin Goin On But The Rent” Going through, while getting through.


Amber: How do you make time for your wellness and self care?


Crystal: Making time for my wellness and self care is starting my rising between 5 AM and

6 AM, give thanks to God for the health and strength, work out, hydrate the body and stimulate my mind. My routine serves me powerful purpose


Amber: What is your greatest inspiration?


Crystal: My greatest inspiration is myself. I am very proud to be me, making a way everyday with happiness, stability, love and support.
